Chapter 16 Surprises all around

Jeff gets back from the bank, coming into the kitchen just in time to hear Maria's announcement about her friend Billy coming to town for a visit. He looks at his second shift cook, to see how he’s taking the news and smiles at the boy’s nonchalant attitude.
Michael isn’t worried and not only because Maria’s description of the guy is less than impressive. The two had worked through their problems of a few days before and are more committed to each other than ever. That’s why he is really surprised when this Billy character actually shows up and jealousy flares inside him to the point where he loses control of his powers.
Kyle and Jeff both notice this, the former saying nothing while the latter puts a reassuring hand on the boy's arm.
"Don't worry, Michael. I've seen the way that girl smiles at you and the one she just gave this Billy guy doesn't hold a candle to it." Jeff then helps him start to clean up the mess.

Mere days later, Michael's head hangs as the flowers in his hands turn to dust and he can't bear to watch Maria walk away from him. He can't believe that she actually broke up with him, after all they've been through and he had stayed on Earth for her. He sits there for a long time, just trying to figure out why.

Ava lies on the roll away bed against the wall, trying hard to fight the sedative Nicolas had given her after forcing her to make Maria break up with Michael the way she did and breaking his heart.
Tears trickle down the girl’s face, wetting her odd colored locks where they lay on the pillow. {I’m sorry! Oh God, I’m so sorry and I wish I could take it back. If I ever get away from dis bastard I’ll make it up to yous both someday, I
swear it!}
Losing the battle at this point, the New York podster falls into an uneasy slumber, haunted by bad dreams of her own making, unable to escape the pain she’s inflicted on others, even in her drugged sleep.

Earlier that same evening...Liz is thinking about blind dates in general (due to learning Xander has been roped into yet another one scheduled for the next evening) and her mind automatically goes to one in particular and all that happened during that night. This leads up to more recent events, like Max leaving her to go with a pregnant Tess and that understandably upsets her.
Getting up and turning on the stereo, she tunes in a station that plays new songs only, pushes the memories aside and tries not to dwell on them anymore, going into her bathroom to shower. It doesn’t stop her from thinking about all of it and she just gets more unhappy and upset.
Liz gets out of the shower, wraps herself up in her robe and toweling off her hair she passes the stereo in her room She is surprised when it goes off by itself. When she puts her hand up to the power button, she stops short because she sees tiny arcs of green energy running over her fingers and gasps with shock. Backing up and sitting down hard on her bed, "Mom!"
Nancy grabs up a ball bat and comes running into her daughter's room, looking around quickly for danger. Seeing nothing but Liz sitting on her bed, staring at her hand like she's never seen it before, the woman comes closer and sits down next to her. Setting the bat to one side, "What is it, Sweetie?"
For answer, the girl holds her hand up for her mother to get a better look at it. "Can you see that?"
Staring, not realizing she's holding her breath, Nancy nods and swallows hard.
Lower lip trembling, "I'm scared, Mom. What does this mean?"
Trying to get her suddenly racing heart to slow, Nancy tries to reassure her frightened child, "Didn't you say that Ava told you Max healing you like that changed you? Maybe this has something to do with that. Regardless of what it is, your father and I are here for you, we'll figure this out
together." She puts a loving arm around the girl's shoulders and pulls her close.
Folding her hands into the sleeves of her robe, Liz presses them to her breast and leans into her mother's supportive presence, more glad than ever that her parents know everything and are here for her.

When Michael gets home later that night, dejected because of Maria breaking up with him, he finds a note on the kitchen table. Reading it, he quickly forgets about his own troubles and hurries across the alley to the Parker residence.
Bursting into the hallway he asks, "What happened? Where is she?" Of Nancy and Jeff who are standing outside Liz's room door.
Jeff turns to the boy with a sigh, "Not as upset as she was, or putting up a very brave front. Whichever it is, knowing we're all gonna stick by her will help. Xander is in with her now and he's made her laugh a time or two. That's good for her." He goes on to explain how Nancy found her and Michael is surprised.
"She's developing an active power? I didn't know that would happen." Making a face, "I sure wish Ava had been less cryptic with the explanations when she was here." He shakes his head and goes into Liz's room after tapping lightly with a knuckle.
Looking up, Xander sees the podster enter and waves him over with a smile. With a grin for the girl by his side, "And yet another of your White Knights has arrived."
Michael mock groans, "Hey, stop with the name calling already." He pretends to take a swing at the other teen's jaw and Xander pretends it connects, rolling to the side and falling to the floor in a heap.
Their theatrics are rewarded by a quiet giggle from a still slightly teary eyed Liz. "You two are too much," the corners of her mouth turn up in a small smile.
Michael grins and takes the place vacated by their friend, putting an arm around the girl's shoulders, "We aim to please." Inwardly surprised at the easy camaraderie he shares with Harris and suppressing a snort of laughter at the thought of how Max and Isabel would react to seeing him act this way.
Getting up from the floor and coming to stand in front of the girl on the bed, Xander asks, "Can I get you anything? A snack, soda, or both?"
Nodding, "Sure, thanks. I think I could use some caffeine in the form of a vanilla coke. Shortbread cookies are in the breadbox in the kitchen."
"Oh, so that's where you hide them? I'll be back in two shakes," Xander says with a smile and leaves the room.
Sitting in silence for a couple of minutes, just basking in the feeling of affection from the arm around her before looking up at Michael with a sobering expression, "Mom and Dad told you?" At his nod she continues, "Weird, huh? Why would it be doing this now, why not sooner?" Her thought of {While Max was still here.} is unspoken, but heard, nonetheless.
Giving Liz a quick squeeze, "I don't know, but I
do know, because your dad told me so, you have all of us at your back."
That got another small smile from the girl.
"Hey, I'll do what I can to teach you control, though you know I'm no expert, still learning in that department myself." He tells her with a chagrined, but comical look on his face.
Grinning now, "Uh huh. You being the expert compared to novice me, I'll appreciate all the help I can get."
Said lightheartedly, Liz's words grip Michael in an unexpected way, making him feel protective and better yet,
needed. Chest constricted with pain still, but now also swelling with the determination to do his best by this trusting soul, the teen puts his own hurt feelings aside in favor of another. "Don't worry. We'll figure it out together," Unknowingly taking a much needed step toward maturity.
Leaning her head onto his shoulder, Liz releases a sigh and feels the last remaining tension leave her body. Feeling very lucky to have so many loving people around her, she lets go of the worry and wonders aloud, "What's taking Xander so long?"
Snickering, "Probably seeing how many cookies he can eat before getting back here with them."
Giggling again, "You're probably right. He is a bottomless pit, isn't he?"
At this moment, Xander enters the room balancing three bottles of soda and the bag of cookies, obviously chewing.
Michael and Liz burst into laughter at the sight.
Xander is puzzled and utters a muffled sounding, "What?" spitting cookie crumbs onto the carpet as he spoke.
The two on the bed only laugh harder.

Later that week…
Jeff and Nancy have been having the boys stay over for dinner with the family every night. Usually they go back to their apartment afterwards, but this time is different.
"Why don't we help the ladies clear the table, fellas. Then we can all come back in here and have a little chat. Okay?" Jeff asks.
Wondering what's up and not getting any hints, the guys do as asked, then come back and sit down with wary expressions on their faces.
Michael tries to settle down and stop fidgeting, but he's been afraid of something happening to take the last of his happiness away. The seriousness on Jeff's face makes him think it's going to happen now.
Liz giggles as she takes her seat, "Dad, you scared them!"
Coming back to the table, Nancy pauses behind them long enough to put a hand on each boy’s back, "Don't look so worried. Nothing is wrong." Giving them each a look at her reassuring smile she goes to her chair which Jeff holds out for her.
Jeff clears his throat after sitting down, "We three have been talking and decided we'd like to change something around here, on paper anyway. You two boys have become like family to us, you know that right?"
Both boys duck their heads, a little embarrassed, but nod and murmur agreement.
Smiling at that, "Well, we know you'll probably need to think about this for a while before making a decision, but we'd like to make it official." Looking from one to the other, "Michael, Xander, will you allow us to adopt you into our family?"
Doing a double take where he sits at the table, Michael suddenly releases the breath he hadn't known he was holding with a surprised rush. The thought of Liz becoming a true little sister to him isn't as radical an idea as it might have been more than a year and a half ago. Realizing he'd sort of begun to think of her that way back when she and Max had started to date, and she constantly put herself on the line for all of them, he accepts that easily. Thinking of Jeff and Nancy as his parents is another story altogether because he's always wanted a real family and the possibility of finally getting it frightens him more than anything in his life. It also tears down yet another wall he's had built up inside for more than a decade and, eyes shining, he looks at all three of their hopeful faces in turn, touched beyond words to finally be
wanted.
As if the opportunity might be snatched from him if he hesitated any longer, in spite of what they'd said, Michael whispers, "I- I'd really like that."
~
This request jolts Xander into staring, openmouthed in shock for a moment before snapping his jaws together with a nearly audible sound. {They want me to be in their family? Do I want that?} He looks at Jeff, seeing the look of pride mixed with hope turned his way. At Nancy, clasped hands in front of her, an expression of yearning on her face that Xander is surprised to interpret as a need to mother him.
Him. He turns his eyes to Liz, knowing he doesn't have brotherly feelings toward the girl, but also knowing she didn't need anything else right now either. Sighing, Xander makes the decision to wall those feelings up inside, showing only familial emotions to her from now on because he wants the package deal more than he's wanted anything for a very long time. {Yes, I do.} He answers his own question. Tears flowing down his cheeks unchecked, he answers aloud a split second behind Michael, "Yes, please?"
Suddenly both boys find themselves up from the table and in a group hug with their new family.
